Recognizing Anxiety

Anxiety can show up in our lives in many different ways. You might have trouble sleeping because you're chasing thoughts in never-ending circles. You might have physical complaints: upset stomach, chronic neck and shoulder pain, or other ailments. Anxiety may take the form of negative self-talk and internal chatter that make you question every decision.

You might have become so used to the chatter that you don't even notice how destructive it can be. Anxiety can show up at work, within your family, or even when you're just hanging out with friends.

We need a certain amount of anxiety in our lives. Yes, you read that correctly. Anxiety can be helpful. It can warn us when our lives are out of balance. It can be a signal that we need to pay attention to something we would rather ignore. However, like with most things in life, too much of a good thing is not a good thing. Too much anxiety can affect our emotional, physical. and even spiritual lives.

How Therapy Helps

I approach my work with clients who feel anxious the same way I approach other issues – with gentle curiosity and compassion. Anxiety is just one part of who we are. It does not have to define us completely. Working together, we can begin to understand it. Why is it showing up now? Where does it come from?

At the same time, we can explore exercises and techniques designed to help you manage your anxiety and get some relief from its relentless presence.
